Speaking of satellite imaging, Nasa have brought out free software called World Wind which allows one to 'zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging
Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data,
World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just
as if you were really there'.
You really need a broadband connection to download it along with a bittorrent client but once it is installed it makes Landsatt images fully available and zoomable. The ability to save screenshots makes this tool useful for satellite image based location maps.

Bernie Goldbach at Irisheyes points to an article in the Independent about the use of imaging techniques to read early 1st millenium papyrii from Oxyrhynchus in Egypt. Multi-spectral imaging techniques developed from satellite technology are being used to read papyrus fragments which are have been too faded to read until now. New texts by the likes of Sophocles have been identified.

The Museum of London have published their 2004 Annual Review on their website and it makes interesting reading. Their project summaries are similar to the excavations database but they also link to a GIS.
