Satellite Imaging

Cork_839660w_5187390nSpeaking of satellite imaging, Nasa have brought out free software called World Wind which allows one to 'zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there'.
You really need a broadband connection to download it along with a bittorrent client but once it is installed it makes Landsatt images fully available and zoomable. The ability to save screenshots makes this tool useful for satellite image based location maps.

Archaeological Publication: Heritage Council Report

The (non)publication of many archaeological excavations has been a issue affecting all professional archaeologists in Ireland and is getting more public discussion now as part of the background to the debates about Woodstown in Waterford (http://www.nra.ie/Archaeology/N25WaterfordBypass-Woodstown/ or http://www.vikingwaterford.com/) and Tara in Meath (http://www.nra.ie/Archaeology/DownloadableDocuments/ or http://www.taraskryne.org/).
The Heritage Council  have just published a digital copy of their new study on the feasibility of setting up a digital excavations archive. Moves along the lines recommended by the author, Nick Maxwell, would benefit both archaeologists and the public alike.
